A signup form lets people give you their email address themselves. Everyone who signs up gets an email with a button to confirm. One press on that button is all it takes, and then you may send them your emails. Signup forms are part of email, so they show up once a workspace has email switched on.
Make a form
- Go to Email, Campaigns, and press Email settings at the top.
- Under Signup forms, press New form.
- Open Edit the form to write your own heading, text and button, and to pick tags for the people who sign up.
- Press Save form.
The form takes signups only once a sender is saved at the top of the same page. Until then the card says so, and anyone who tries the form is told it is closed.
Every form gets its own page on app.postfjord.com. You can share the link anywhere: in your bio, in a post, in a DM or on a poster as a QR code.
The page shows whose list people join. At the top it has your sender name, your logo and a link to your website. At the bottom it has your company name and postal address. The name, company and address come from your sender under Email settings, at the top of Campaigns. The logo and website come from Settings, Brand kit. Without a logo or website, the page shows your name on its own.
Put the form on your website
- Copy Code for your website.
- Paste it on your site where the form should be, for example in an HTML block in WordPress, Squarespace or Wix.
- A person types their email and presses the button. For a few seconds they see your form page with Signing you up. Then the email to confirm goes out by itself.
In those seconds Postfjord's page checks that a person, not a program, is signing up. The person does not have to do anything. If they typed the wrong address, they can press Use another address while it runs.
Use a form you already have
If your site already has a form, for example in Webflow, you can send it to Postfjord instead:
- Set the form's action to the link to your form page.
- Set its method to POST.
- Name the email field email. A field called first_name or name is picked up too, if the form asks for a name.
Then new signups come straight into Postfjord, and you do not have to move them over by hand.
What happens when someone signs up
- They become a contact, with the tags you picked. If they are already a contact who has not confirmed yet, they get the tags.
- They get one email to confirm. They press Confirm my email, and the page that opens confirms them by itself. Until then they show as Waiting for confirmation, and your emails do not go to them.
- Someone who is already confirmed gets nothing from the form. No email, no welcome email, and no new tags. Anyone can type any address into a form, so a form never changes a confirmed person or sends them mail on a stranger's word.
- Someone who unsubscribed from you gets nothing, and the form does not tell anyone that.
The page after the button looks the same for everyone. It never shows who is already on your list.
Each form shows how many signups it has had.
A welcome email and a thank-you gift
Under Welcome email on a form, press Write a welcome email. It goes out by itself when someone confirms through that form, and it is an automation you can find under Email, Automations. How automations work: Email automations.
Under Edit the form, a Thank-you gift is a short text, for example a discount code. It shows on the page right after someone confirms, never before. When you write the welcome email, the gift is put into it too.
Protection against fake signups
Programs that fill in forms are common. Your form keeps them out in a few ways:
- The browser has to do a short calculation before the button works. A person does not notice it.
- One device can sign up only a few times an hour.
- If a form gets more than 200 signups in one hour, Postfjord switches it off. Look at the new contacts, and switch it on again under Edit the form if they are real people.
FAQ
Can I write the form in my own language?
Yes. Everything a person reads on the form page, from the heading to the text after they sign up, is yours to write under Edit the form. The email to confirm is in English for now.
How many times does a person press a button to sign up?
Twice. Once on your form, and once on Confirm my email in the email they get. The pages in between do the rest by themselves: the check that a person, not a program, is signing up, and the confirmation itself. If their browser has JavaScript switched off, they see a button to press instead.
Can a spam filter confirm someone by opening the link?
Almost never. Most filters only fetch the link to look at it, and that changes nothing. The page confirms only when it is open on a screen. A rare work email filter that opens pages in a full browser could confirm an address that someone else typed in. Every email you send has a link to unsubscribe.
Can someone sign up again after they unsubscribed?
Not yet. Postfjord keeps their no, so nobody can sign them up again by mistake. Signing up again, with their own confirmation, comes later.
Why did someone already on my list not get the welcome email?
The welcome email goes to people who confirm through the form. Someone who confirmed before does not confirm again, so the form sends them nothing. Anyone could type their address into your form, and they should not get mail because of that. They still get your campaigns. To start an automation for them, add the tag it starts on to their contact yourself.
What happens to the contacts if I delete a form?
They stay. Only the form page and its link stop working.
