Mastodon

Connect your Mastodon account on any server with your address, then schedule posts with text, links, up to four images or a video.

Postfjord posts to Mastodon like any other channel. Write the post once, pick Mastodon with your other channels, and schedule it. Your account can be on any Mastodon server: mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, your own, or any other.

Connect your account

  1. Press Connect on the Mastodon card under Channels.
  2. Type your Mastodon address, for example @name [at] mastodon.social. You can also type only your server, like mastodon.social.
  3. Press Continue to Mastodon, sign in on your server and press Authorize.
  4. Postfjord adds the account to the workspace.

You never type your Mastodon password into Postfjord. You sign in on your own server's page, and the server lets Postfjord post for you. Press Disconnect in Postfjord to stop it, or remove Postfjord from Authorized apps in your account settings on your server.

What a post can hold

  • Text up to 500 characters, or the limit your server sets. Every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is. A mention like @name [at] mastodon.social counts as @name.
  • Links, @mentions and #hashtags turn into links in the post. Your server makes the link card itself.
  • Up to four images, each with the alt text you gave it in the media library.
  • Or one video: MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 99 MB or the limit your server sets.

Images and a video cannot go in the same post. A text over the limit is stopped in the composer: Postfjord does not split it into a thread. Every post is public.

Numbers

Analytics shows your followers, and favourites, replies and boosts for your recent posts. Postfjord reads them from your account every night. Mastodon counts no views, so there is no reach.

When something goes wrong

If your server stops accepting the connection, the channel says Reconnect. Press it, type your address and sign in again. The connection does not run out by itself, so this happens when Postfjord was removed from your authorized apps or the account moved to another server.

FAQ

What do I type to connect?

Your Mastodon address, the one that starts with @ and has your server after the second @, like @name [at] mastodon.social. Your server alone works too. Postfjord then opens your server's sign-in page, where you choose the account.

Why does my server ask me to authorize Postfjord?

Every Mastodon server runs on its own. The first time someone connects an account on a server, Postfjord adds itself there as an app, once. After that your server asks you, on its own page, to let Postfjord post for you.

Does Postfjord see my Mastodon password?

No. You sign in on your own server, never in Postfjord. Your server gives Postfjord permission to read your profile and your own posts, and to post. You can take it back at any time.

Can Postfjord read or answer my Mastodon messages?

Not yet. Postfjord publishes posts and reads your numbers. Mastodon mentions and private messages are not in the inbox.
