Academy / Design posts that stop the scroll

Lesson 4 of 5 · 5 min

Photos that fit

Pick a photo that tells the story, drop it where it belongs, and crop it so the important part shows, in a box, a circle or across the page.

A real photo of your place, your product or your people stops more scrolls than any graphic. Your own phone photos are good enough, if they are sharp and the light is good.

Pick the photo

Drop it where it belongs

Drag a photo from Photos onto the page. While you drag, the page tells you what will happen:

For a photo in a fun shape, open Frames, add a heart, an arch or a letter, and drop the photo on it.

Crop so the right part shows

  1. Double click the photo, or pick it and press Crop.
  2. Drag the photo to move it inside its frame, so the face or the product sits where you want it.
  3. Use Zoom to go closer. The photo always covers its frame, so there is never an empty edge.
  4. Press Done.

A tip: put the eyes or the product about a third from the top. It feels calmer than the exact middle.

Check what stuck

You want a round photo in a template that has a circle shape. What do you do?

Show the answer

Drag the photo onto the circle. A photo dropped on a shape fills it and keeps its outline.

The face in your photo is cut off at the top of the frame. How do you fix it?

Show the answer

Double click the photo and drag it down inside the frame. In Crop you move and zoom the photo inside its frame.

Which photo works best behind a headline?

Show the answer

A person in front of a calm wall. One subject and a calm area give the words room.
