WordPress

Connect your own WordPress site with an Application Password, then write, schedule and publish articles with a title, a cover picture and tags.

Postfjord publishes articles to your WordPress site like posts to any other channel. Write the article, pick your site with your other channels, and schedule it. It goes out at the time you chose, with its title, cover picture and tags.

This works with WordPress sites you host yourself, at any web host. Sites on WordPress.com do not work yet.

Make an Application Password

An Application Password is a password WordPress makes for one app. It lets Postfjord publish for you without your normal password, and you can take it back at any time.

  1. Sign in to your WordPress site.
  2. Open Users, then Profile.
  3. Scroll down to Application Passwords.
  4. Type Postfjord as the name and press Add New Application Password.
  5. Copy the password WordPress shows. It is 24 letters and digits in groups of four. WordPress shows it only once.

Your WordPress user needs the role Author, Editor or Administrator. A Contributor or Subscriber cannot publish.

Connect your site

  1. Press Connect on the WordPress card under Channels.
  2. Type your site's address, like https://example.com. If your blog lives in a folder, type that too, like https://example.com/blog.
  3. Type your WordPress user name.
  4. Paste the Application Password and press Connect site.

Postfjord checks the address, the user name and the password with your site, then adds it as a channel. If something is wrong, the window says what, for example a wrong password or a user that cannot publish.

Write an article

Pick your WordPress site in the composer and open its tab.

  • Title: the headline of the article. It is needed.
  • Text: the body of the article. A blank line starts a new paragraph. A line that starts with ## becomes a heading, and lines that start with - become a list. Web addresses turn into links.
  • Hashtags: they become the article's tags on your site. A tag that does not exist yet is made.
  • Picture: the first picture becomes the article's cover (the featured image). An article takes one picture.
  • Excerpt: a short summary that your theme shows in lists and that search results may use. Leave it empty and WordPress uses the start of the article.
  • Send as: Published article puts it live on your site at the scheduled time. Draft on the site puts it in WordPress as a draft, where you look at it one last time and publish it yourself.

Approval, the calendar and Bo work for articles the same way as for posts.

What Postfjord keeps

Postfjord keeps your site's address, its name, your WordPress user name and the Application Password. The password is kept encrypted and is only used to publish your articles. Press Disconnect and Postfjord deletes the password. You can also delete it in WordPress under Users, Profile, Application Passwords: Postfjord then stops at once.

When something goes wrong

If WordPress stops accepting the password, the channel says Reconnect. That happens when the Application Password was deleted or your user changed. Make a new Application Password and connect again with it.

If a security plugin or firewall blocks Postfjord, the post says so. Allow requests to /wp-json/ in the plugin, then press Retry.

FAQ

Does Postfjord see my WordPress password?

No. You give Postfjord an Application Password, which WordPress makes for Postfjord alone. Your normal password stays yours, and you can delete the Application Password in WordPress at any time.

Why does WordPress say Application Passwords are off?

WordPress turns them on for sites that use https. Some security plugins turn them off. Check that your site's address starts with https, and look in your security plugin for a setting called Application Passwords.

Can I schedule an article in WordPress instead?

Postfjord's calendar does the timing. The article goes to your site at the time you picked in Postfjord, as published or as a draft.

Does Postfjord show visits to my articles?

Not yet. WordPress keeps no visitor numbers of its own, so Analytics counts the articles Postfjord published.
