Salon marketing ideas that book the chair

Salon marketing ideas that end in a booking, with before and after posts, a comment BOOK flow to your booking link, a rebooking email six weeks later and a review ask. Written for a salon owner who markets between clients.

Postfjord comment to DM automation: a comment with the keyword GUIDE leads to a public reply, a DM with the guide and a follow-up.

A salon sells time in a chair. An empty hour on Tuesday at two is gone for good, and no amount of likes brings it back. So the salon marketing ideas worth your time are the ones that end in a booking.

This post gives you five of them, in the order you set them up: posts that show your work, a comment that sends the booking link, a way to fill a gap the same day, an email that brings clients back, and a review ask. The examples use a made up salon in Denver called Juniper Hair. The steps work the same for a barber, a nail studio or a brow bar, in any country.

Most salons are one person doing the marketing

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 670,800 jobs for barbers, hairstylists and cosmetologists in 2025, and projects 719,200 by 2035. That is growth of 7%, which the BLS calls much faster than average. It also expects about 80,300 openings a year. (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked 28 September 2026.)

The more telling number is who they work for. The same page says 80% of barbers and 48% of hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists are self-employed. Many of them rent a chair or a suite and bring their own clients.

That means the person with the scissors is often the person writing the captions. Every idea below is chosen so it fits in the ten minutes between two clients.

Idea 1: before and after posts that end with one step

Before and after is the post people stop for. Most salons already take the photos. What is usually missing is the step after the scroll.

Take the two photos in the same spot, with the same light, at the same height. A plain wall by a window beats a busy station. Ask the client first, every time, and keep that yes where you keep your client notes.

Then write a caption with three parts:

Upload the photos to the media library. Postfjord crops each one for the format you post in and keeps the alt text with it, so the same photo works as a square post, a portrait post and a story. If you want a text overlay or your colors on a tip card, the design editor has layouts in your brand kit.

Put BOOK in the image as well as in the caption. People comment the word they can see.

This is the one that turns a post into a booking. Someone comments BOOK under your post, and a few seconds later they have your booking link in their DMs, while you are still at the sink.

If you picked Hair salon or beauty when you created your workspace, a first automation with the keyword BOOK is already there, with texts to fill in. To build it yourself, open Automation, press New automation and pick Comment to DM. Then:

  1. Post: pick the post, or The next post or reel if it is not out yet.
  2. Keywords: type BOOK. Leave Reply to their comment under the post on.
  3. Opening DM: "Hey! Want the link to book with Juniper?" with one button, "Send me the link".
  4. The DM with your link: paste your booking page. Postfjord shortens it so every tap is counted.
  5. Press Save automation and test it from another account.

Write the public reply so it says where to look: "Sent you a DM. Check message requests if you do not see it." The first DM from a business often lands in that folder.

You can also set it up while you write the post. In the composer, DM automation for this post lets you pick Create one from a keyword, and the automation is attached the moment the post goes live. Give each before and after post its own automation, and after a month you can see which look brought in bookings. The full walkthrough is on the automation help page, and the reasoning behind it is in How comment-to-DM works.

Two add-ons are worth turning on. Follow up if they do not click the link sends one more short message, 30 minutes to 23 hours later, only to people who did not open the link. Ask for their email in the DM gets you an address for idea 4.

Idea 3: post an open slot the same day

A cancellation at noon leaves a gap at two. A post that says so, with a time and a price, fills more of those gaps than a post that says "we have availability".

Press Dictate in the composer and say it the way you would say it at the desk: "Free slot today at two for a cut and blow dry, 85 dollars, comment BOOK for the link." Claude writes the post for Instagram and Facebook in your salon's voice. You read it, change what you like and publish. The dictation page shows how it works.

Keep the same keyword. The BOOK automation you already have answers these comments too if you bind the post to it from the composer.

For questions that come in as DMs ("do you have anything Saturday?"), the inbox collects Instagram and Messenger in one list. The Hair salon template gives you five saved replies for prices, booking, opening hours, cancellation and how to find you, so each answer takes two taps.

Idea 4: a rebooking email six weeks later

You know how often your regulars come back for a cut or their roots. If it is about every six weeks, a short email at week six reminds a new client to book before they forget.

Email in Postfjord (postmail) is in testing, so this part works for workspaces that have email switched on.

First, connect your booking system under Settings, Apps, Count your bookings. Calendly and Acuity connect with a key. Most other booking systems can send bookings to your own address, straight from the system if it sends webhooks, or through Zapier or Make. When a client books, Postfjord finds them among your contacts and adds the tag Booked. The bookings help page has every step.

Then build the email:

  1. Go to Email, then Automations, press New automation, then Blank email automation at the bottom.
  2. Under What starts it, pick A tag is added to a contact and choose Booked.
  3. Set the first wait to 42 days.
  4. Write a short email: "It has been six weeks since your cut. Want the same time next month? Here is the link." Put your booking link in a button.
  5. Under When emails go out, pick Only at these times, for example 9:00 to 11:00 on weekdays, so it lands when people plan their week.
  6. Press Save changes, then Start.

The Booked tag is added the first time a client books through your system, so this reaches each new client once. Only people who confirmed their email address get it. The email automations help page explains waits, times and who is sent what.

Idea 5: ask for the review while they still like the mirror

A review from a client who loves their color helps the next client choose you. The best moment to ask is right after the visit.

Postfjord's Ask for a review automation thanks a client in their DMs when they book, with a button to your review page on Google or Trustpilot. Set it up under Automation, New automation, Ask for a review, turn on A booking under After, and paste the link under Your review page. On Google, open your Business Profile and press Ask for reviews to copy that link.

Instagram and Messenger let a business write only within 24 hours of the person's last message. So the thank you goes out when a client books soon after chatting with you, for example right after the BOOK DM. Each person gets one thank you a month at most, even if they come in every week. For the words to use at the mirror and in the message, read How to ask customers for reviews.

Your Instagram bio has one link. For a salon, it should lead to booking in one tap.

A link in bio page on postfjord.page puts the booking button on top, then your price list, your latest posts and a signup for your emails. It lives at an address like juniper-hair.postfjord.page. Print its QR code for the front desk and the mirror. Landing pages are open to a few workspaces in early access. The landing pages feature page shows every block, and What to put in your link in bio has a worked salon example.

Salon Instagram post ideas for the next month

Twelve more, each one quick to shoot between clients:

Every post that sells a service ends with the same step: comment BOOK. Plan them on Sunday in the calendar, press Plan next week, and approve each post before anything is scheduled. The salons and beauty page shows the whole setup.

FAQ

How can I attract more clients to my salon?

Show your work, make booking one step and ask happy clients for a review. On Instagram that means before and after posts that end with "comment BOOK", an automation that sends the booking link in a DM, and a review ask after the visit.

What should a hair salon post on Instagram?

Before and after photos, open slots with a time and a price, answers to common questions, your team and your price list. Each post that sells a service should end with one clear step.

How do I get clients to rebook?

Send a short email when the service is due again, for example six weeks after a cut, with a button to your booking page. In Postfjord you do that with an email automation that starts when a client gets the Booked tag.

Does Postfjord take the bookings?

No. Clients book in your own booking system. Postfjord sends them the link, counts the bookings it brings in and tags those clients Booked.

Can I post photos of clients?

Only with their yes. Postfjord does not store consent for photos, so keep it with your client notes.
