Stories are the part of Instagram where a small account has the edge. They sit at the top of the app, they disappear after 24 hours, and the people who see them are mostly the people who already follow you. That makes them the place for "two spots left at 6 PM" and "the sourdough is out of the oven", not for reaching strangers.
This post has 30 ideas, sorted by what you want the story to do. Each one says whether you can plan it ahead or need to post it from the Instagram app, because that decides how much of your week stories take.
Why stories suit a small account
Socialinsider looked at 161,180 stories posted by brands from January to May 2024 and 2025 (published June 26, 2025, checked September 28, 2026). It measures reach rate: the share of your followers who saw at least one slide. The smaller the account, the larger the share:
Image stories follow the same curve, a little lower: 9.55% for accounts with 1K to 5K followers and 0.5% for 100K to 1M. Two more findings from the same study are worth using:
- Video beat images at every account size. If you have a 10 second clip, use it over a photo.
- Longer sequences reached more people. A sequence of 1 slide reached 6.3% of followers, 6 slides reached 20.5%, and the peak was 37.8% at 13 slides. A run of 4 to 6 stories a day is a good place to start.
So a coffee shop with 2,000 followers can expect a story to reach a couple of hundred regulars. That is the audience for a flash offer or a new class time.
Plan ahead or post in the app?
Most ideas below are a photo or a short video with a few words on it. Those you can make on Sunday and schedule for the week.
Stickers are different. Polls, questions, quizzes, countdowns, links and Add Yours are added in the Instagram app (Instagram Help Center). Meta's API does not publish stickers (Meta developer docs), so no scheduling tool can add them for you. Post those from your phone.
Each idea is marked:
- Plan ahead: a photo or video you can schedule.
- In the app: needs a sticker, or has to happen live.
A useful middle road: write "Reply YES" or "Reply with an emoji" on the image itself. A reply is a DM, so it works without a sticker, and you can schedule it.
Stories that sell
- Today's spots. "3 spots left in the 6 PM class." A photo of the room with the number on top. Plan ahead, and change it on the day if it sells out.
- The new thing, up close. A 10 second video of the new product, drink or treatment. Plan ahead.
- Last call. "Kitchen closes at 9. Pie is still here." Post in the app, because the timing is the point.
- A price, said out loud. "Intro month: $49 for unlimited classes." People hesitate to ask about price in a DM. Plan ahead.
- Before and after. A haircut, a cleaned-up garden, a finished repair. Two slides. Plan ahead.
- Countdown to a launch. A countdown sticker for the Saturday sale, posted a few days ahead. In the app.
- Link to book. A link sticker to your booking page on the day you have gaps. In the app. For which page to link, see what to put in your link in bio.
- Reply for the code. "Reply CODE and we'll DM you 10% off." A photo with the words on it. Plan ahead, and let an automation send the code (see below).
Stories that show the people
- Who is working today. A photo of the team member behind the counter, with their name. Plan ahead for the regulars, post in the app for changes.
- The first 30 minutes. Opening the shop, setting up the mats, warming the oven. Three short clips. In the app, or film once and plan ahead.
- A customer, with permission. A regular's first handstand, a finished tattoo. Always ask first. Plan ahead.
- The mistake. The burned batch, the spilled paint. People like a business that laughs at itself. In the app.
- Where it comes from. The farm your coffee is from, the supplier who makes your candles. Plan ahead.
- Staff pick of the week. One product, one sentence from the person who picked it. Plan ahead.
- A day in numbers. "Today: 84 coffees, 3 birthdays, 1 dog." Post at closing time, in the app.
Stories that answer questions
- Parking. A photo of the lot or the nearest garage, with an arrow. Every local business gets this question. Plan ahead, then save it to a Highlight.
- What to bring. "First class? Bring water. We have mats." Plan ahead.
- Opening hours this week, and especially holiday hours. Plan ahead.
- How it works. Three slides: book, arrive, what happens next. Plan ahead.
- Ask me anything. A questions sticker, then answer the best ones over the next day. In the app.
- The question you got in the DMs. Screenshot a question (hide the name), answer on the next slide. Plan ahead.
- Myth and fact. "Hot yoga is only for flexible people. False." Plan ahead.
Stories that get replies
- This or that. A poll: oat or whole milk, morning or evening class. In the app.
- Help us pick. A poll on the new menu item or the new color. People who voted come back to see what won. In the app.
- Quiz. "How many shots in our house latte?" A quiz sticker. In the app.
- Add Yours. "Show us your post-class smoothie." In the app.
- Rate it with an emoji. "New flavor. Reply with one emoji: 🔥 or 😐." Plan ahead.
- Reply with a word. "Reply SCHEDULE and we'll send the new timetable." Plan ahead.
- Guess the number. "How many cinnamon rolls do we bake on a Saturday? Reply with a guess, closest wins one." Plan ahead, answer the next day.
- Say thanks for a tag. Reshare a customer's story that tagged you, with a thank-you. In the app.
Answer every story reply with a DM
Ideas 8, 28 and 29 ask people to reply. A reply to a story lands in your DMs, and a busy owner sees it hours later. Postfjord's automation can answer at once. From the automation help page:
- Open Automation and press New automation.
- Pick the Story replies card.
- Under Accounts, pick your Instagram account.
- Under Keywords, type the word from your story, like
CODE, and press Enter. Leave keywords empty to answer every story reply. An emoji works as a keyword too, because an emoji reaction arrives as a message with that emoji. - Pick Wait before answering: at once, or after 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes. A reply a minute later feels less like a bot.
- Write the Opening DM: a question with one button, like "Want the code?" and "Send it".
- In The DM with your link, paste the link and keep
{link}in the text. - Press Save automation.
The reply opens Meta's 24 hour window, so the whole automation can run: the button, the link, and a follow-up. Every message shows up in the inbox marked Replied to your story, with a link to the story. Under the automation, Story replies counts how many came in.
A second template, Thanks for a mention, sends a thank-you DM when someone tags you in their story. It pairs with idea 30: the DM goes out on its own, and you reshare when you have a minute.
One setting to check first: in the Instagram app, go to Settings and privacy, Messages and story replies, Message controls, and turn on Allow access to messages under Connected tools. Without it, replies never reach any tool (channels help).
Schedule a week of stories
Here is a week for a small yoga studio in Denver, using the ideas above. Stories are marked P for plan ahead and A for in the app.
| Day | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Spots left today (1, P) | This or that poll (23, A) |
| Tuesday | What to bring (17, P) | Who taught today (9, P) |
| Wednesday | Intro month price (4, P) | Ask me anything (20, A) |
| Thursday | Answers from Wednesday (21, P) | Reply SCHEDULE (28, P) |
| Friday | Spots left this weekend (1, P) | A day in numbers (15, A) |
| Saturday | Countdown to Sunday's workshop (6, A) | Customer's first headstand (11, P) |
| Sunday | Opening hours next week (18, P) | Rest |
That is 13 stories, 9 of them planned on Sunday. The 4 in the app take a few minutes each.
To plan them in Postfjord, from the composer help page:
- Press New post and pick your Instagram account under Channels.
- Under Media, press Choose media and pick one image or video. A story shows only the first one.
- Need words on the image? In the same window, press Add text to the last selected image, or Create image to make one in the design editor.
- On the Instagram tab, set Format to Story. Postfjord sends no caption with a story, so the words must be on the image.
- Pick a time in Publish at and press Schedule.
Upload a photo and Postfjord makes a 9x16 story crop of it, though a story goes out with the whole image, uncropped (media help). For a clean fit, shoot vertical. The week then sits in the calendar next to your posts and reels. The scheduling page shows how it looks, and how to schedule Instagram posts, reels and stories compares the other ways to do it.
FAQ
What should a small business post on Instagram stories?
Things that matter today: open spots, the new product, a price, who is working, answers to common questions. Stories last 24 hours, so they suit news and offers better than feed posts do. Save the ones that stay true, like parking and what to bring, to a Highlight on your profile.
How many Instagram stories should a business post a day?
Start with 4 to 6. In Socialinsider's 2025 study, 1 slide reached 6.3% of followers and 6 slides reached 20.5%. Keep going only if people still watch to the end.
Can you schedule Instagram stories?
Yes, from Meta Business Suite on a computer or with a scheduling tool like Postfjord. A scheduled story holds one photo or video and no stickers. Polls, questions, links and countdowns have to be added in the Instagram app.
Are photo or video stories better?
Video. In Socialinsider's study, video stories reached more followers than image stories at every account size, for example 10.4% against 9.55% for accounts with 1K to 5K followers. A 10 second clip from your phone is enough.
How do I get more replies to my stories?
Ask one clear question and say how to answer: "Reply YES", or a poll with two choices. Then answer fast. With a Story replies automation, everyone who replies gets a DM within the minutes you choose, even at 11 PM. Instagram auto reply: three ways to set it up shows the other options.
